BURMA (or Laos), late XIXᵉ - early XXᵉ century. - Lot 28
BURMA (or Laos), late XIXᵉ - early XXᵉ century. Statuette of seated Buddha in bhūmisparśa mudrā (taking the earth as witness) posture, the right hand brushing the ground, the left resting on the knees. The face features almond-shaped eyes, full features, the lips drawing a slight meditative smile. His head is adorned with a pointed ushnisha, and his ears are very distended, typical of Burmese representations. The monastic robe is finely sculpted and placed on the left shoulder. The base, decorated in molded relief, is hollowed out at the back with a reliquary compartment once used to hold prayers or sacred fragments. Carved lacquered wood, traces of red polychromy, black lacquer, remains of gilding. Height Height : 41 cm Width : 21 cm Note: This type of Buddhist statuette corresponds to models from the Mandalay period (1853-1948), with a soft, symmetrical style, long, slender hands and a slender composition. The hollowed-out base suggests a votive or domestic function, reinforcing the work's devotional character. Erosions of time on the base
