CHINA, MAJIAYAO CULTURE, MACHANG PHASE, Neolithic period (c. 2500-2000 BC) Vase with two handles ending in a straight, slightly constricted neck, modeled with a head projected in relief. The rim is decorated with squared, undulating geometric motifs. Beige terracotta with polychrome decoration Height 15 cm. Width: 15 cm. Provenance: French antique made in the 1970s/90s This two-handled vase with a slightly narrowed straight neck is typical of the Majiayao culture. Although less common, the presence of a head modeled in relief can be found in certain pieces from the Machang phase. This phase is distinguished by the refined use of polychromy and the complexity of geometric motifs, illustrating the stylistic evolution of Neolithic ceramics in northwest China.
