SOUTH INDIA, TAMIL NADU, 19th century.
Statuette representing a female deity standing in a wiggling posture, her hands adopting two distinct mudrā: the right hand in the gesture of giving (varada mudrā), the left raised in a gesture of welcome or teaching (abhaya or kataka). The finely modeled face is framed by an elaborate headdress, a domed headdress highlighted by side ornaments reminiscent of South Indian productions. The tight-fitting, richly incised garment and detailed finery accentuate the elegance of the wearer.
Gilded bronze.
Height : 28
Width: 9.4 cm
Note: This divinity is an avatar of Parvati, a goddess associated with the Shiva cult. The double lotus-shaped base rests on a stepped pedestal decorated with floral and geometric motifs typical of Tamil Nadu production during the colonial period.
