NORTHERN BURMA, 15th-17th century - Lot 12
NORTHERN BURMA, 15th-17th century Statuette depicting the Buddha seated on a stepped base. The hands are lowered in front of him, palms facing the ground, index finger and thumb joined, while the middle and little fingers are raised, forming a gesture of subjugation. The stylized face, almond-shaped eyes and domed ushnisha are reminiscent of archaic Burmese production. Bronze with brown and green patina. Height : 13,5 Width : 7 cm Note: This gesture corresponds to an apotropaic variant from the archaic forms of Burmese Theravāda Buddhism, sometimes found in ancient representations of the Protector or Exorcist Buddha. This symbolic gesture can be interpreted as a mudrā of subjugation or appeasement of demons, linked to the mastery of negative forces. This type of representation is rare and typical of local traditions in northern Burma or Arakan, between the 15th and 17th centuries.
