CHANCAY, Peru, AD 1100 to 1400
Statuette depicting a standing nude priestess, her hands raised to the sky in a gesture of divine invocation. She wears a headband.
Beige terracotta with brown decoration. Small chip on the edge of the forehead, slightly missing finger.
Dimensions: 28.5 × 22 cm
Provenance: Former Drouot auction. French private collection.
The motifs painted on the body may reflect ceremonial body-painting practices attested in the Chancay culture. Recent studies have revealed the presence of complex tattoos on Chancay mummies, suggesting that these body ornaments had spiritual or social significance.
