ROMAN EASTERN EMPIRE, second half of 1ᵉʳ century to 3ᵉ century AD. Shallow circular reservoir lamp, without handle, decorated with a band of horizontally placed double scrolls and petals around the rim. The bowl is decorated with a hare eating a bunch of grapes. The short, round spout is oval in shape. Orange terracotta Accident on the spout (missing), otherwise in good condition. Type Kennedy 5, Adad 7 Dimensions: 8.5 x 7.2 cm Provenance : Former Osenat sale, expert Jean Roudillon (was part of a very fine collection of a French industrialist) Lamps of this type, both functional and decorative, were used to illuminate interiors while expressing cultural and religious motifs rooted in the daily life of the Eastern Roman Empire. Despite a slight damage to the spout, this specimen remains a fine illustration of the elegance of antique production. Expert : Serge REYNES
