Lovis CORINTH - Gvardeïsk (Russia), 1858 - Zandvoort (Netherlands), 1925
Presumed portrait of his wife Charlotte Berend
Charcoal and graphite on ochre paper lined with cardboard
Height 43 cm.
Width: 31 cm (as seen).
Oak frame with patina.
Fold at left corner.
Provenance: France, private collection
Note:
Between 1901 and 1911, Lovis Corinth had the opportunity to represent his young wife on several occasions, either by drawing her or on canvas. Charlotte Berend, herself a painter, posed for this important German artist (despite his place of birth, he had adopted German nationality), who was attached to the Expressionist movement. She was his muse, and this study is to be compared with several paintings, including 'Nana' dating from 1911 at the Saint-Louis Art Museum USA cf figure1.
The young Charlotte was the subject of an etching and several drawings, whose pose adopted by Corinth is very close to this large drawing cf. figures 2 & 3.
There is also a photograph of the period taken by the painter, in which the young woman served as a model and whose pose is quite similar.
Works by Lovis Corinth are rare on the French market.
