Jean-Baptiste PILLEMENT (Lyon, 1728-1808) - Lot 245
Jean-Baptiste PILLEMENT (Lyon, 1728-1808) Chinese Games Black stone drawing. Signed lower left and dated 1771 29 × 21.6 cm. Insolations and stains Note: Jean-Baptiste Pillement was one of the most brilliant creators of chinoiseries in the XVIIIᵉ century. His "Chinese games", published in the form of engraved collections and widely distributed, are inspired by a dreamed-of China: characters in oriental costumes, fabulous animals, hanging pagodas, fairy-tale landscapes. Our drawing is a perfect illustration. These motifs were a great success with manufacturers of wallpaper, textiles, porcelain and furniture. He supplied models to the Gobelins, Sèvres and Jouy factories, and his designs were adopted all over Europe, including at the Meissen factory. A dazzling success, he was appointed painter to Marie-Antoinette in 1778.
