This type of bench, used by the Lobi of Burkina Faso, is much more than a utilitarian object. Often associated with the social or spiritual status of its owner, it embodies the simplicity and purity of line characteristic of the Lobi aesthetic. The bird's head, a frequent symbol in their art, evokes a connection between the earthly and spiritual worlds, and reflects the importance of nature in their cultural universe.
