BOURGUIGNON-FLAMAND WORK - 15th century - Lot 138
BOURGUIGNON-FLAMAND WORK - 15th century
Large Piéta in polychrome carved wood, original in part preserved. On a terrace, the Virgin Mary is depicted half-seated on a rock, her right knee bent to the ground, carrying the body of Christ in an angle, which she holds with her right hand, her head bent to the left.
Height 69.8 cm Width : 45 cm Depth : 29.5 cm
(Missing the Virgin's left arm, one of Christ's arms and calves, old traces of woodworm).
Notes : Our sculpture shows an appeasement of pain, which was more pronounced in the Haut-Rhin schools of the early 15th century. Here, the depiction is more of resignation than pain, and tends towards dignity. These are the characters that stand out in the Burgundian-Flemish school.
Claus Sluter (born in Haalem around 1355 and died in Dijon in 1406) is thought to be the sculptor in the service of the Dukes of Burgundy who influenced this Gothic period.
