Charles L'ÉPLATTENIER (1874-1946) - Lot 71
Charles L'ÉPLATTENIER (1874-1946)
The valley of Saint-Maurice
Pastel drawing signed lower left and located "Saint-Maurice" on reverse.
H. 41 x L. 28 cm
Provenance: Collection of Dr. Kenneth GRAHAM
This landscape depicts the Saint-Maurice valley, with the Rhône below, where the river flows out of the canton of Valais towards Lake Leman. It was painted in the 1930s, before the freeway was built under the hills. In the past, the monks of the abbey retained the right of passage over the bridge to the other bank of the Rhône. They would lock the access gate at sunset.
