Jules DUPRÉ (1811-1889) - Lot 116
Jules DUPRÉ (1811-1889)
Interior of a farm in Berry
Watercolor on paper
Dated and signed lower right "1834, Jules Dupré".
Bears on the back of the mounting board an old handwritten label: Dupré N°99 Interieur d'une ferme and on the board: N 5602
H. 34 x L. 46 cm (at sight).
Our watercolor is described by Marie Madeleine Aubrun opposite the canvas: Intérieur de ferme dans le Berry: "Dressed in a white skirt, red blouse and berrichon bonnet, a peasant woman is scouring a copper cauldron on the well slab; nearby, vegetables and pots and pans. To the left, a rooster and a few hens. Further on, lit by a low window, a corner of the room with two children standing next to a bedridden woman. On the ceiling, laundry dries on a long line. A harness and various utensils hang on the wall, near a small cupboard in the right foreground.
This work, which stands out for its Dutch lighting and masterly virtuosity of execution, was painted not from life, but from a drawing taken in the Berry region.
"Jules Dupré executed a very elaborate watercolor of reduced dimensions from this painting" (i.e., this is our watercolor).
