Lapie Nicolas Alexandre, son of Nicolas Lapie, an earthenware merchant in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine, was born around 1730; he registered his letters of mastery with the Châtelet in Paris in 1764; and less than eleven years later, on February 8, 1775, he died at his home in the rue de Charenton. Lapie had signed his works with the mark N-A-LAPIE, an ink imprint of which can be seen on the minutes of the seals affixed to his home after his death. The same document mentions, among the pieces he left in progress, some twenty small tables known as chiffonnières. Over the course of his eleven-year career, he produced numerous "tables chiffonnières" and other Louis XV, Transition and Louis XVI furniture in the classical style, covered with sheet veneer or marquetry. His goods were sold at public auction on March 2.
