NEW IRELAND, Papua New Guinea - Lot 293
NEW IRELAND, Papua New Guinea Ancient Kulap magic stone carved with an ancestral figure. Chips and marks of time. Height Height : 26 cm Provenance: former Chiswick sale, London (2018) Collection of Professor Kenneth Graham Kulap figures are limestone sculptures from the Punam region of central New Ireland. They were traditionally created after the death of an individual, often by a male relative, who selected a suitable stone from a local quarry to carve the effigy. Between 1880 and 1910, production of these figures increased, partly to meet European demand, and many were never used in rituals. Expert : Serge REYNES
