BAGA, Republic of Guinea (Guinea-Conakry) - Lot 161
BAGA, Republic of Guinea (Guinea-Conakry) Tonkongba dance crest mask A dance mask with pure, stylized forms of great modernism, evoking projecting horns and a dolphin's tail. Hardwood, old reddish patina and wear marks Dimensions: H. 57 cm; W. 18 cm Provenance : Former collection of sculptor Berndt Helleberg (1920-2008), Sweden Tonkongba masks are among the most emblematic and spiritually significant creations of Baga culture. Associated with the sea, these masks link the Baga to their maritime origins and to the protective spirits of water. They are sculpted with a minimalist aesthetic that lends a timeless modernity to their forms, while integrating deep symbolic references. During ceremonies, the Tonkongba mask recounts the history and traditions of the village, serving as a living memory for future generations. It is also used to protect the community and invoke benevolent forces. In form and function, this mask illustrates both the technical mastery of Baga sculptors and the spiritual richness of their culture. Expert : Serge REYNES
