TEKE, NGOMBE, FANG, Gabon, Democratic Republic of Congo - Lot 147
TEKE, NGOMBE, FANG, Gabon, Democratic Republic of Congo
Set of three very old coin torques
Bronze with a patina of age and use.
Dimensions: Ø 23 cm, 18 cm, 24.5 cm
Coin torques served as both body ornaments and means of exchange. Their symbolic and economic value varied according to the social and cultural context of each ethnic group. For example, among the Fang of Gabon, bronze torques were used as dowry coins, reflecting their importance in matrimonial transactions. Among the Teke of the Democratic Republic of Congo, copper or bronze torques, often decorated with geometric motifs, were status symbols and played a role in commercial and social exchanges. These objects testify to the richness of traditional monetary systems in Central Africa, where aesthetics and functionality come together.
