Poncho element featuring stylized bird friezes, as well as w - Lot 130
Poncho element featuring stylized bird friezes, as well as wave and geometric motifs
Multicolored camelid threads, (some fragility)
Nazca, Peru, 200-600 A.D.
H 66 x W 60 cm
Provenance: collection of Professor Kenneth Graham.
Nazca weaving is one of the most refined of pre-Columbian antiquity. The fibers used, derived from camelids such as alpaca and llama, were renowned for their softness, strength and ability to retain the vibrant colors of natural dyes. The intricate, stylized patterns, such as those adorning this poncho piece, reflect not only the technical skill of the craftsmen, but also the importance of textiles as media for cultural and religious expression.
