The city of Nishapur, located in northeastern Iran, was a major center of artistic and cultural production during the Samanid period (IXᵉ - XIᵉ century). Polychrome ceramics from this region, particularly vases and bowls, are famous for their figurative decorations blending animals and abstract symbols.
The motif of a feline pouncing on a deer evokes themes linked to hunting and nobility, incorporating Sassanid and Islamic influences. Often intended for the elite, these pieces symbolized wealth and refinement in domestic and ceremonial contexts.
