ROMAN TIME, Mediterranean Basin, 100 to 250 AD - Lot 23
ROMAN TIME, Mediterranean Basin, 100 to 250 AD Unguentarium with long neck ending in flat lips, with wide pear-shaped body Blue glass with pearly and multicolored iridescence Dimensions: H. 16.7 cm Provenance : Collection of Professor Kenneth Graham Unguentaria, like this example, were multi-purpose containers used in the Roman Empire to hold perfumed oils, balms or medicinal ointments. Their wide bellies enabled them to store slightly larger quantities than narrower balsam jars, while retaining an elegant, practical shape. The natural iridescence of glass, visible today, is the result of chemical alteration of the material over time. Expert: Serge REYNES
