GREECE, VIᵉ century B.C. - Lot 11
GREECE, VIᵉ century B.C. Statuette depicting a standing Kore, dressed in a broad pleated garment and wearing a stephane, holding an offering on her left arm Terracotta with polychrome remains Broken, glued in two places, probable restoration to rear of lower part H. 26.7 cm L. 7.7 cm Provenance: Collection of Professor Kenneth Graham Koré statuettes represent young women, often in a votive or cultic role. Dressed in long pleated garments and richly adorned, they sometimes held offerings, as here, symbolizing their role as mediators between the faithful and the deities. The stephane, a diadem or headband worn on the head, underlines their sacred status and their association with religious rites. These statuettes, placed in sanctuaries, were often dedicated to goddesses such as Athena or Artemis. This Kore illustrates the elegance and piety of Greek artistic and spiritual practices, while reflecting the aesthetic ideals of the Archaic period. Expert : Serge REYNES
