Mehrgarh, located in present-day Pakistan, is one of the earliest Neolithic sites in South Asia, dating from around 7000 BC. Mehrgarh pottery, particularly between 3000 and 2500 B.C., is characterized by the use of the potter's wheel and complex painted motifs, often featuring animals. This vase, decorated with stylized deer, reflects the skill of the craftsmen of the period and the importance of animal motifs in their iconography. Mehrgarh ceramics bear witness to the beginnings of mass production and cultural exchange in the region, prefiguring the advances of Indus Valley civilization.
