After Lorenzo BARTOLINI (1777-1850) - Lot 128
After Lorenzo BARTOLINI (1777-1850) Bust portrait of Lord Byron The model created in 1822 Marble Total height: 48 cm Height without base: 30.5 cm Related work: A copy of this bust is in the collections of the National Portrait Gallery, London, under inventory number NPG 1367. The plaster cast is in the collections of the Galleria dell'Accademia, Florence. Literature: Sources tell us that on January 3, 1822, Byron, then in Pisa, posed for Bartolini, who had expressed a wish to have his portrait painted. The poet accepted the request, but only on condition that the sculptor also paint one of his beloved Teresa Gamba Guiccioli, who had accompanied him during his stay in Pisa. Work on the two busts proceeded apace, as it seems the two marbles were already finished by the following October.
