Literature: Sources tell us that on January 3, 1822, Byron, then in Pisa, posed for Bartolini, who had expressed a wish to have his portrait painted. The poet accepted the request, but only on condition that the sculptor also paint one of his beloved Teresa Gamba Guiccioli, who had accompanied him during his stay in Pisa. Work on the two busts proceeded apace, as it seems the two marbles were already finished by the following October.
