1716 - ESTABLISHMENT OF THE BANQUE GENERALE
Very rare silver medal commemorating the founding of the Banque Générale by John Law on May 2, 1716. The obverse of the medal features Roettiers' portrait of Louis XV as a child, while the reverse depicts the establishment of a golden age resulting from the bank's founding, represented by Aequitas (Goddess of Commerce) holding scales and a cornucopia.
Very fine condition
Our copy engraved on the edge "M.A. Langlois - J.P. Arthus - 14 juin 1832". Probably in commemoration of a wedding where it was offered as a gift.

Related work: A copy of this medal is known to have come up for public sale at the dispersal of the collection of Mr. Lucien LARIVIERE from March 15 to 17, 2001 in Baltimore (lot 2045). This medal came from a Sotheby's sale in December 1980 (lot 306) and originated from the collections of the Duke of Nortthumberland.
