Jules MICHELET (1798-1874). French historian, liberal and anticlerical. He is considered one of the greatest historians of the 19th century.
- L.a.s. "J. Michelet". Nervi (Italy) January 25, 1854, 4 pp. in-8 on thin paper. To his colleague Henri MARTIN. Ailing, he tells him he has left to rest by the sea near Genoa, and regrets not having been able to meet him before his departure: "... You whom I hold in such high esteem, why did I not write to you from here?..". He says he was deeply saddened to learn that Mr. LAMENNAIS was nearing the end of his life: "... Oh, I wish he had lived a little, to see at least the first days of the coming victory...". The letter ends with a very friendly greeting: "I shake your hand fraternally, dear friend and dear brother in work and faith". Michelet shared Lamennais' hopes that French politics would open up to liberalism.
Attached, Athénaïs MICHELET (1826-1899). Historian and writer, second wife and collaborator of Jules Michelet.
- L.a.s. " A. Michelet" Paris November 9, 1872, 4 pp. in-8. To ask the historian to recommend a deserving young woman, who runs an institution in Passy, and to tell her about her husband's deteriorating health.
